Can I use keycaps from a laptop on a desktop keyboard?

As a keycaps supplier, I’ve been asked a wide range of questions from customers over the years. One query that often pops up is, "Can I use keycaps from a laptop on a desktop keyboard?" It’s a valid question, especially for those looking to customize their keyboards or find replacement parts. In this blog post, I’ll delve into this topic in detail and share my insights based on my experience in the keycaps industry. Keycaps

Physical Compatibility

The first aspect to consider when answering this question is physical compatibility. Laptop keyboards and desktop keyboards have different designs and dimensions, which directly affect the fit of keycaps.

Laptop keycaps are generally smaller and more compact compared to those of desktop keyboards. This is because laptops need to optimize space due to their portability. The keycap sizes on laptops can vary significantly depending on the make and model. For example, ultra – thin laptops might have even smaller keycaps to accommodate a slimmer profile.

On the other hand, desktop keyboards come in various layouts, such as full – size, tenkeyless, and compact. The standard keycap sizes for desktop keyboards are well – defined in the industry. The most common sizes for base row keys on desktop keyboards are 1.25u, 1.5u, 1.75u, 2u, 2.25u, and 6.25u (where ‘u’ is a unit of measurement for keycap size).

The stem design of keys also differs between laptops and desktop keyboards. Stems are the parts that connect the keycap to the switch mechanism underneath. Laptop switches often have unique stem designs tailored to the specific keyboard layout and space constraints of the laptop. Desktop keyboards, depending on the brand and the type of switches used (such as Cherry MX, Gateron, etc.), have more standardized stem designs.

For example, Cherry MX switches have a distinct cross – shaped stem, and many third – party keycaps are designed to fit this stem perfectly. Laptop switches may have square, rectangular, or other non – standard stem shapes, making it difficult for laptop keycaps to fit on desktop keyboard switches with a different stem design.

In most cases, due to the differences in size and stem design, you cannot directly use keycaps from a laptop on a desktop keyboard. However, there are some exceptions. Some high – end laptops, especially those designed for gamers, may use keycaps and switches that are more similar to desktop – style components. But these are very much the exception rather than the rule.

Functional Compatibility

Even if you somehow manage to physically fit a laptop keycap on a desktop keyboard switch, there are still functional considerations.

Laptop keycaps are often designed to work with the specific switch technology used in laptops. Laptop switches are typically lighter and require less force to actuate compared to desktop switches. Desktop keyboards, especially mechanical ones, are known for their tactile feedback and require a certain amount of actuation force to register a keystroke.

For example, Cherry MX Red switches, a popular choice for desktop keyboards, have an actuation force of around 45 grams. In contrast, laptop switches may have an actuation force as low as 20 – 30 grams. If you put a laptop keycap on a desktop switch, the tactile feel and typing experience may be significantly altered. You may find that the keycap doesn’t sit properly on the switch, or that the key registration is inconsistent due to the differences in actuation force.

Moreover, desktop keyboards often come with additional features such as backlighting, macro functions, and media controls. Laptop keycaps may not be designed to accommodate these features. For example, a laptop keycap may not have the appropriate cut – outs or transparency to work with a backlit desktop keyboard.

Customization and Adaptation

While direct use of laptop keycaps on desktop keyboards is challenging, there are some ways to achieve a degree of customization if you’re determined.

One option is to use keycap adapters. These are small components that can be placed between the switch and the keycap to alter the stem size or shape. However, finding adapters that work for the unique stem designs of laptop keycaps can be difficult, and they may not always provide a perfect fit.

Another approach is to use 3D printing technology. If you have access to a 3D printer or a 3D printing service, you could potentially create custom – made adapters or even keycaps based on the shape of laptop keycaps but designed to fit desktop switches. This option requires technical skills and some investment in equipment or service fees, but it offers a high level of customization.
